also spent hours on a trans-continental flight reading Henry David Thoreau's Journal in loving detail confident that probably no one anywhere even in an alternative universe was reading the words I was reading at that time.

I've taken to a very niche occupation: reading sections of novels that no one reads, taking time with background passages that professors who are familiar with classics routinely skip over. all the descriptions at the start of "Madame Bovary"--amazing whale minutiae in "Moby Dick"--most tedious passages in "Ulysses" (Irish politicians, old feuds)--almost hallucinatorily precise descriptions of landscape in Paul Bowles. knowing that NO ONE ELSE is reading these passages is a weird sort of pleasure. it is good to do useless things often.

@shakiraenjoyer I love museums for all, most people in the US live within driving distance of at least 1 or 2 locations and many can be reached with public transportation (like in NY, DC, LA) for those who are interested!! museums4all.org

not sure if anyone is at Bluesky. when I visit the site all is calm, unchanging; I have not had a single new follower in many months; exchanges are always interesting & intelligent but relatively few. Bluesky exudes the air of an upscale mall, beautifully maintained, hushed.
one will likely not be mobbed or mugged here but one will likely not feel a quickening of the heart, a jab of adrenaline. Twitter may be a "cesspool"-- at least in some quarters--but I think of it as lively like the old Madison Square Garden: raucous, unpredictable, obnoxious, good fun, surprises.

I received a rejection from Granta today. What I felt was: not hate, not anger. Just the flat finality of a heart too tired to keep trying. The kind of tired that goes through bone and keeps going. As if I’d put down a pan I had no business carrying.
