There is only one day a year that private pilots can operate ‘freely’ around Dublin Airport Today is that day!!! Dublin Airport is closed to commercial traffic on christmas to give staff a well deserved break, But the tower remains open with skeleton staff to facilitate Search and Rescue flights as well as Emergency Air Ambulance flights. Today, some light aircraft are also being permitted to do a few low passes of the runway! #aviation #christmas #travel #avgeek #dublin #ireland #DublinAirport

If we were *really* serious about tackling nature collapse in Ireland (a very big if, I know), what would we be doing? A thread...🧵

To those still skeptical that Israel is committing war crimes: Will you believe it when it comes from a literal IDF officer saying "yes we murder civilians and then pretend they were terrorists"? If not then, then what amount of evidence will suffice?

An "accidentally rewilded" 377-acre UK farm is now home to many threatened species, including turtle doves, warblers, 11 bat species, orchids + butterflies. Such examples prove how nature can recover when we let it, + that rewilding reverses nature loss. theguardian.com/environment/20…

Four different trams. On separate lines. All going in different directions. The Irish mind boggles! One of the biggest things holding Dublin back is the lack of good public transport. It's getting better. But it's still miles from where it should be.

@burner199020 @NaoSouONight @gerarddunne20 @AJC_DoesItAll @Telegraph 1. Bullshit. It's a school. Being a taxpayer doesn't give you the right to enter. 2. He doesn't. Not anymore. He was fired for harassing his boss. Repeatedly. And because he doesn't have a job anymore he doesn't pay taxes. So your "1." response is doubly wrong.

@cianjmur @IrishEnergyBot There needs to be a minimum amount of spinning inertia in the grid, which wind turbines don't provide. The more synchronous condensers we have the more gas plants can be dispatched down during high wind events. x.com/Jordan_W_Taylo…
Jordan Taylor@Jordan_W_Taylor

As Ireland links more wind turbines and shuts down thermal powerplants, it needs to synchronise all that variable power and add back inertia to the grid lost from decommissioned plants. So: The world's largest flywheel, 130 tons, & synchronous condensor installed in Moneypoint.

@IrishEnergyBot Why do wind and gas follow the same time trace like that? Why doesn't gas dispatch down in line with demand instead of exceeding demand?

Wind, hydro, biomass, and waste generation along with pumped storage discharge was equivalent to 74% of yesterday's electricity demand, with a peak of 94% at 05:30. Other sources (mostly gas) equalled 32% of demand. 6% of generation was exported, 1% of demand was met by imports.

In 2022, short on electrical grid inertia and long on renewable power, Ireland installed the world's largest flywheel, 130 spinning tons. Why did we do something so preposterous? And are there other, better storage technologies? Let's find out. It's the grid storage thread!

@acfunduro @GavinTobin @greenparty_ie We pay for the connector for the real benefits it provides; low CO2 electricity from France/Europe, viability for more wind & solar penetration in the Irish grid, less thermal generation needed on standby during high wind events, cheaper average electricity prices, etc.

@CillDar @GavinTobin @greenparty_ie I'll have to keep a closer eye on the Eirgrid dashboard. Dunkelflaute is very likely as well so great to have nuclear on tap. Weird, we pay for the connector and the private wimdfarm owners make the profits. Go neo liberalism.

@acfunduro @GavinTobin @greenparty_ie Probably about 40-70 times a year, predominantly in the winter. So having less curtailment events, and less severe curtailment means wind turbines are more profitable, which increases the financially viability of current and new wind projects.

@acfunduro @GavinTobin @greenparty_ie France has ~15GW of interconnections to Europe. When we have curtailed wind on our grid the settlement price drops to zero. This will absolutely be bought by the french grid. And if they have surplus they'll be selling to Germany/Switzerland/Spain/Belgium/Italy.

@CillDar @GavinTobin @greenparty_ie And like the Leprechaun, we are likely never to see that. The giant plug is for safe stable French nuclear power and that's a good thing. We are decades of exporting and you know that as well. Decades.

@acfunduro @GavinTobin @greenparty_ie The Celtic Interconnector will be a 700MW DC connection to the french grid. It won't be a one-way connection; we will be able to import power from France's grid and we will be able to export surplus wind power that would otherwise be curtailed.

Wind generation late this morning equalling the all-time record of 4629MW set last December. This was equivalent to 79% of electricity demand at the time 🥇🥇 (bit of a surprise - thanks @JosephJCullen for alerting us while we're off travelling in a very distant timezone! ✈️)
