@Maddiesblverse the translator has been bullied off of social media, as i expected would happen. english is the least formal, least literal, least nuanced language that exists, yet half of danmei readers demand a perfect translation from a language that is the exact opposite.

@Maddiesblverse the translated spelling of a name is not substantial to the story whatsoever. the inclusion of a space, or lack thereof is even less substantial. and it is an accurate translation of his name as there is already official merch with that spelling.

English does not have the same nuances as older languages and I’m tired of the danmei community pretending that it does. When every word has ~30 synonyms, I trust translators to do their best. I’m still Michelle Lynn whether it’s spelled that way or Michele Lyn, or Michellelynn.

translation discourse is exhausting to read when people are so unaccepting and avoidant of translations beyond the literal meaning. it takes away so many possibilities and so much creativity to reduce translation to this 1:1 dichotomy.

@Maddiesblverse if you want publishers to utilize AI for translations, continuing dog piling on the human translation teams. if not, accept that they are hired to make decisions. unless their choices change the story, let them do their job.

@Maddiesblverse but it’s not purposefully misspelling his name. His name is Chinese. Unless Yi Shi Si Zhou has confirmed his English name, every English iteration you’ve seen is a valid translation of 安折. Just because you’re used to it being one way, doesn’t mean other ways are misspelled.
