I have spent over a decade arguing that queer rights and Indian values are not in conflict. I still believe that. But I will not pretend that what happened in the last few weeks is anything other than a rollback. No rape law for men or trans persons. No right to identify your own gender without medical approval. No right to donate blood to your own family. These are not oversights. Each one was a decision. Decriminalisation of homosexuality in 2018 was real and hard won.
