At the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, during Pickett's Charge General Robert E. Lee climbed the Virginia Monument and shinnied up Traveler's neck where he held onto the ears so he could have a birds-eye view of the charge. GNMP rangers soon ordered him down and fined him.
