After January's bumper surplus (because people are paying a lot more tax), the public finances came back down to earth in February... The government borrowed £14.3bn last month, £2.2bn more than in February 2025. This is not a big miss, and borrowing in the year to date is still down. But worryingly, the increase in February was due to higher debt interest costs - even before the fallout from the Iran war. The figures were also still flattered by higher CGT receipts as people sold assets to beat the tax hikes in Labour's 2024 Budget. Above all, any improvement under this government still depends on further increases in the tax burden, rather then spending restraint... 🙄

This is not good news given what will now happen to UK finances as a result of the war on Iran. And perhaps we can have some silence from all those who piled to exaggerate the significance of January’s freak figures. The UK borrowed a higher than expected £14.3bn in February. The shortfall between government spending and income was £2.2bn higher than in the same month a year ago and far above the £8.5bn forecast by economists polled by Reuters. At a time of peril for nation’s finances it is frightening to have R Reeves as Chancellor.

@alexmassie They can’t be that stupid can they? Really? My expectations are very very low, but even so, surely they can’t be looking for savings from the MoD? Now? surely not??? #callthemeninwhitecoats

So much for Rachel Reeves’ “iron clad” and “non negotiable” fiscal rules 👇🤷‍♂️ Don’t worry, am sure the bond market would be completely relaxed about this 👇
Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford

EXCLUSIVE: Sir Keir Starmer has been told that he may have to “rethink” the government’s borrowing rules to fund a potential cost of living bailout amid mounting concern about the impact of the Iran war on household finances. The Times has been told that there was a discussion about the government’s fiscal rules at Cabinet on Tuesday. Lisa Nandy, the culture secretary, suggested that they may need to be reconsidered if prices continue to rise and a major package of support is needed. Nandy, who is aligned with the soft left of the Labour party, has become the first member of the Cabinet to suggest that the government’s fiscal rules may need to be relaxed in response to the crisis. Ministers are increasingly concerned that the conflict in the Middle East will lead to long-term economic scarring and push up the cost of food, heating and mortgage payments for millions of families. The cost of food is expected to rise particularly sharply as a result of fertiliser shortages and the impact of increased transport costs The Treasury stands by the fiscal rules, saying they have helped bring “stability to the public finances, investment to our infrastructure and reform to our economy”. It points out they were a manifesto promise thetimes.com/article/83d4c6…

First pint since eye surgery… will be hiding my eyes and face for a bit in public. So the shades are on even at night in the pub. Earlier Mrs C asked me to cover up when we were eating as I was so repulsive to look at! 😂🤣😂😎
