A Japanese person asked why we care about race swaps after seeing my post about One Piece's Usopp A couple of reasons: - It takes away from the authenticity of the adaptation. - It is always done for political reasons rather than talent, so it will result in a lesser talent being hired (i.e., DEI). The character also as a result becomes an instant and inevitable reminder of this fact every time they appear on screen. - It is often inexplicable within the world’s lore when a character is race-swapped. If you’re familiar with Game of Thrones, something as small as the hair color of certain characters plays a big role in that story. Even getting their hair color wrong would ruin the entire plotline, let alone a race swap. This might not apply to every story, but even then, you often end up with inconsistencies in the established lore (e.g., black Elves in The Rings of Power). The more you alter the original work, the harder it becomes to care about the lore at all, since the creators have proven they’re willing to change it willy-nilly for ideological reasons.
