@holland_tom We may get back to that level of beer consumption if the problems with our rivers aren't resolved soon?

Impressed to learn that the average adult in the 16th century Low Countries drank 3 pints of beer a day.

@Kpaxs Obama wrote in his memoirs that a problem in Washington DC was that so many participants were trained to win the argument, rather than solve the problem

@susie_dent @hayfestival As a 69 year old lawyer I still talk about eg "The Ballad of Reading Goal". Ever since first coming across the word "gaol" it's been "goal"not "jail" for me and I absolutely can't shake it.

Thank you to the lovely audience member at @hayfestival who shared that her daughter had once corrected her pronunciation of ‘epiphany’ and told her it should of course be ‘epi-fanny’. Which word have you royally mispronounced because you’d only ever seen it written down?

@thomasforth the "office car" collects you from your front door. Configured with all corporate IT including security, so you're working securely on your way into the office...

There are so many possible compounding effects of self-driving. It's quite fun (but I think pretty pointless) to think through them. If self-driving cars make congestion tolerable, it'll make the remaining human driving intolerable. Will that accelerate transition or backlash?

If anybody uses the word "pass" when I die, then I promise that my ghost will come back to haunt them. "Passing" is for footballers.

@Adam_Grant_Bell Adding to the questions - and does the presence of the regulator free both the Government and the regulated businesses from "owning" responsibility for their actions/inactions? Rather than "is this right" does the view become "it's OK if the regulator signed off/didn't object"?

I want to offer a short theory of why this has happened, not because I'm sure I'm right but because I want to test it more broadly. Fundamentally, it's about the structure of the State and how the Conservatives have failed to reform it. /1
James Murray@James_BG

Millions of words written about the apparent collapse in Tory support, but so much of it just glosses over the fundamental reason. The government has overseen the worst real wage growth in centuries and collapsing public services. It's economic project has objectively failed.
