Everyone is talking about what Nigeria is getting from the Coventry deal. The question missing from the celebration: why does Coventry need Nigeria? Here is what is happening inside UK higher education right now. 43% of UK universities reported a deficit in 2024-25. Without mitigating action, nearly three quarters could be in deficit by 2025-26. Over 60 universities are in financial distress. Courses are being cut. Staff are being made redundant. The funding model is broken. The cause: domestic tuition fees were frozen for eight years. The fix was international students paying premium fees. Then the UK government tightened immigration. Overseas enrolments dropped sharply. The money stopped arriving. Coventry specifically had over a third of its 30,000 students from overseas. After Brexit, its EU student numbers fell to roughly 10% of what they were. Its own provost called the situation "difficult." So the UK government changed strategy. Instead of bringing students to UK universities, send UK universities to the students. Target: £40 billion in annual education exports by 2030. Nigeria, with nearly 85,000 students studying abroad and a ban on foreign universities lifted three months ago, is exactly the market that strategy needs. The same state visit that produced the Coventry campus announcement also produced: a University of Birmingham partnership with UNILAG. An LSE data science partnership with Nile University. Wellington College opening in Lagos by 2027. All education. All the same week. All supported by the UK's Department for Business and Trade. Expanding overseas was already part of UK strategy. The crisis made it a necessity. Nigeria is not the beneficiary of a generous educational gesture. Nigeria is a revenue market in a UK survival strategy. That is the context the celebration skipped. 🐝🐆
