The Aphrodite of Rhodes or the Crouching Venus of Rhodes. The Greek goddess of beauty and love lifts her hair in her fingers to dry it after bathing, and looks out at the viewer openly displaying her breasts. Not really the usual Greek statue pose! But isn’t she lovely?

@Agrail There was a Belgian princess with a long blonde braid who brought you coffee, right? Anyway, I really loved Frankfurt—and Berlin too (back at 18). And then you have Heidelberg! My classmates and I took the train there from Frankfurt.

@ClaudiaBocchini Yes I am 😎🏙🖖. And embarrassing is you having this unearthly beautiful grocery shopping trail in this medieval town center in that small Italian town and me - not 🤨🤣. But I had my fair share too. This was the window to my workplace at age 26. Some poetry was carved there.

Walking home with the grocery bag for lunch. How beautiful is my adopted city as it prepares for the Palio! 🏇

@Agrail Are you from Frankfurt? Or should I say Mainhattan? 😏 I lived there for a month when I was 20. What’s so embarrassing? The medieval historic center of lots of small Italian towns? Or me just doing the grocery shopping?

@weRessential @iosif_lazaridis Thank you so much! I was inspired by the Greeks of the past and… of the present! I was afraid that few people would appreciate those beautiful posts in ancient Greek, so I felt it was my duty to share their content.

🇮🇹 UPDATE—Days after Salim El Koudri carried out a terror attack in Modena by ramming pedestrians and stabbing civilians, violent clashes erupted between Tunisian and Egyptian drug gangs fighting over control of drug trafficking areas in the city. At least 3 people were injured.

Homer—blind though tradition holds him—sang of “white-armed Helen” (λευκώλενος). Today, while cinema celebrates color and light, we are asked to practice a forced color-blindness when reading the classics. Just as Socrates refuted Thrasymachus’ sophistry in Plato’s Republic, we must reject this contemporary sophism that twists ancient philology for ideological convenience. As Aeschylus showed in The Suppliants, the Greeks clearly distinguished complexions: the Danaids arrived in Argos as a “dark, sun-beaten race” (μελανθὲς ἡλιόκτυπον γένος), and no king would have mistaken them for λευκώλενοι maidens. Homer, a blind man, could see the truth; today, those with light in their eyes choose blindness. Truth is dangerous inside the cave of ideologies! Superb thread, @iosif_lazaridis.

@iosif_lazaridis Perhaps physics is simpler than cooking, if an AI operates by fundamental principles. Making all the layers of baklava would be even more complicated, don’t you think?

@ClaudiaBocchini The process of making a cake or the cake itself? :) I use it as a relatively simple mechanical object for which there is very little training data for AI (unlike others, such as wheels, spindles, etc.)

Haha, thanks for the “Grok detective” title! For me, the ultimate detective is “Inspector Derrick”! It’s a German TV series set in Munich, Bavaria, that I used to watch as a little girl on Italian TV. Even now as an adult, every time I wear a camel trench coat I feel a bit like Derrick! 😂

Ms Claudia the Grok detective, which sounds like the the making of a TV show, exposes the “implausibility” of a black Helen: “No detectable Sub-Saharan African ancestry in published Mycenaean or LBA Aegean genomes. All ancestry is West Eurasian (Anatolian Neolithic farmers ~75% + Caucasus/Iran-related + minor EHG). Predominantly SSA features (very dark skin, coiled hair) are implausible.”

People discussing polytropos in the Odyssey should be aware that it is not some obscure word in Greek. Maronitis, Kazantzakis-Kakridis, Sideris, Polylalas all keep polytropos in their modern Greek renderings of the epic. 1/

Actually, my first input resulted in a hallucinated ‘cake’! The shells went into the bowl together with the eggs, while the sugar got dumped completely outside of it... And here @TrueAIHound and I are dreaming of a humanoid robot that truly knows how to make a real omelette in a real kitchen!

The issue, my dear sir, with choosing ‘the life of the mind’ and buying into Aristotle is that it completely ruins your ‘human condition’: even if you know absolutely nothing, everyone thinks you feel superior. Try explaining that it’s all Aristotle’s fault! Or maybe Arendt’s, too! And yes, I’m talking about myself. I just preferred to let them take the blame first.

Do you live a life of the mind, dear reader? εἰ δὴ θεῖον ὁ νοῦς πρὸς τὸν ἄνθρωπον, καὶ ὁ κατὰ τοῦτον βίος θεῖος πρὸς τὸν ἀνθρώπινον βίον. - If then the mind is divine compared to man, so also is the life of the mind divine compared to the life of man. Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics 1177b

I don’t have a better selfie (my husband is a terrible photographer). Anyway, this is me: the binocular SMILE procedure I had a few years ago wasn’t fully successful, and a bit of myopia has returned. In places where I really need to see fine details, I put on my glasses! 🤓 x.com/claudiabocchin…

Tomb II at Vergina is one of the very few unlooted Macedonian royal tombs ever found. Everything inside was intact. The Polycentric Museum of Aigai reunites the royal city, palace and tombs of ancient Aigai into one living museum 👌🏼 Save this to remember that on international museum day, you picked one of the coolest museums to visit on your next trip to Greece.vergina #internationalmuseumday #discovergreece #greekmuseums
