At Web Summit Vancouver, CEBC hosted two panel discussions focusing on the social and technical innovation needed to unlock the full potential of our electricity system: "Indigenous Innovation & Energy Sovereignty" and "Preparing BC’s Grid for Climate Extremes." Here are three key takeaways: 1) Energy Sovereignty & Growth Must Be Community-Led: True energy independence for First Nations involves much more than technology; it is directly tied to environmental stewardship, respectful knowledge and data control, and bolstering local capacity. Panelists emphasized shifting away from developer-led models toward funding community "Energy Champions" and empowering Indigenous youth to lead the projects aligned with their Nation's values. It was also made clear that achieving meaningful self-determination requires updating regulatory and financial frameworks to properly support First Nations power authorities / utilities, which CEBC is studying in partnership with the Province and UVic. 2) Tech Innovation Can Help Keep Workers & Emergency Response Personnel Safe: With intensifying wildfire seasons and persistent labor shortages in emergency response, deploying AI-driven hazard detection and autonomous drones is becoming a necessity. These specialized solutions can help keep personnel out of high-risk, toxic zones while providing the early detection needed to safeguard critical energy infrastructure. Innergex's partnership with Fireswarm and Strategic Natural Resources displayed how new technologies are ensuring our infrastructure is resilient while supporting worker safety. 3) The Practical Necessity of Storage and Microgrids: Reducing reliance on fossil fuels in remote areas is an urgent priority; Trent Moraes noted that Haida Gwaii alone accounts for over 50% of BC Hydro's recorded diesel emissions. Several panelists spoke to diesel reduction and helped demystified the role of battery storage, noting that both utility-scale and localized battery systems are globally proven solutions that pair effectively with renewable resources to manage extreme weather peaks and stabilize the grid. Building a secure, resilient energy future requires a cohesive provincial strategy—one rooted in community capacity building, updated regulatory frameworks, and proactive technological adoption. CEBC will continue to advocate for more proactive, fair, and ambitious clean energy planning for BC. In addition to moderating the first panel, CEBC Interim Executive Director Stephen Rayner was pleased to connect with Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth Ravi Kahlon at the BC Pavilion. CEBC’s operational team was proud to deliver these panels, with Summit planning and delivery led by Jack Magnus, Director of Engagement & Operations, and supported by Ombrielle Neria, Director of Communications & External Relations. Thank you to all moderators and panelists for contributing to these important conversations at one of Canada’s largest innovation events.
