Today in #RenewableEnergy News: Carson welcomes first community solar project "With rising energy costs, the City of Carson, California is embracing change.  The city is working with Clean Power Alliance, a local non-profit electricity provider that is implementing new community solar projects around Southern California. CPA said solar power helps households save money on their electricity bills and helps combat climate change. “This isn’t the only solution,” said Ted Bardacke, the CEO of CPA. “We also need to build stuff out in the desert, where it’s super low-cost, mass economies of scale and that is going to require more transmission. So it’s not like one solution is better than the other, we need to bring everything to bear on our climate crisis.” A study by Stanford University finds that over 25 years, solar energy avoids between 15,000 and 20,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per household compared to regular power." Clean Power Alliance developed the Smart Light Switch Pilot Program to help customers reduce electricity use and save money on their monthly bills, and the pilot's early results suggest that the program’s simple visual notifications can drive meaningful energy savings. By responding to CPA Energy Savings Events, participating households reduced their electricity use by approximately 20% compared to their baseline consumption. The Geysers geothermal power complex recently achieved commercial operation for a new power purchase agreement that provides 18 megawatts (MW) of electrical generation to CPA customers in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. The new agreement represents CPA’s second of three operational contracts with The Geysers, with the third coming online in June 2027. The addition of 18 MW provides enough renewable energy to power to nearly 25,000 homes in Southern California, reinforcing our commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. CPA's Sun Storage Rebate program has supported the installation of over 300 kWh of battery storage systems that have helped customers save money on their electricity bills and provided them with the security of a backup power option. Eligible customers may receive the Base Incentive, Reliability+ Incentive, and either the Medical Qualified Incentive or the Income Qualified incentive for a combined total of $2,250. With over 1,200 qualified solar battery storage systems to choose from, CPA customers can now select the right solar battery for their home. California’s community choice aggregators (CCAs) recently gathered in Sacramento for the 2026 California Community Choice Association (CalCCA) annual conference, where attendees connected with industry peers, explored emerging strategies and examined key renewable energy issues and opportunities impacting communities statewide. The conference, which celebrated CalCCA’s 10th anniversary, drew more than 1,000 CCA executives and staff members for a series of interactive workshops, expert-led sessions and panel conversations focused on key industry topics, including energy reliability requirements, financing mechanisms, procurement obstacles and strategies for accessing available funding resources.
