The Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, Bar. Tenioye Majekodunmi, delivered a goodwill message at the 2026 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction presentation, February 10, 2026, at the NAF Conference Centre in Kado, Abuja.
I convey my warm greetings to NiMet on the public release of the Nigeria 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction.
On behalf of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), I thank NiMet for its leadership in providing timely, science-based climate information that supports national planning, protects lives and livelihoods, and increases Nigeria's climate resilience. Agriculture, aviation, water resources, catastrophe risk management, health, energy, infrastructure, and other major sectors of our economy rely on the Seasonal Climate Prediction.
Nigeria published its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) 3.0 in 2025, a more ambitious climate plan that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase adaptation. The success of this NDC and Nigeria's Net-Zero goals depends on reliable, science-based data and effective monitoring, reporting, and verification procedures. NiMet provides essential climate data and early warning intelligence for credible implementation, tracking, and accountability.
Early warning systems and actionable climate intelligence are crucial as climate variability and catastrophic weather occurrences increase. With its sector-specific insights and sub-national outlooks, the SCP directly supports Nigeria's commitment to anticipatory action, climate adaptation, and evidence-driven policy implementation under the Nigerian Climate Change Act and helps deliver the Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative by anticipating, communicating, and acting on climate risks.
Recent Conference of the Parties results in Brazil reinforce this imperative. The Conference marked a major move toward Paris Agreement implementation, raising ambition and delivery expectations. This means Nigeria must prepare for a new era of mitigation, adaptation, climate finance, technological collaboration, capacity building, and innovation based on credible climate research and data.
I urge all Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and State Governments to incorporate the 2026 SCP into their planning, budgeting, and investment decisions to ensure climate risk information influences policies, programs, and development outcomes.
The NCCC looks forward to working with NiMet and other stakeholders to transform climate information into policies, investments, and on-the-ground activities, especially at state and local government levels, where climate impacts are most felt.
Thank you to NiMet for presenting the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction. The Council remains committed to advancing climate-informed development for a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable Nigeria.
Thank you. @Climategovng
Mrs. Omotenioye Majekodunmi,
Director-General, National Council on Climate Change (NCCC).

Climate ambition must be matched with policy certainty and credible delivery frameworks. Africa’s transition will be driven not only by pledges, but bankable projects that earn trust and long-term investment.
