Who should be remembered for the next 250 years? The @FinancialTimes posed that question to artists, thinkers and leaders from the U.S. and around the world.  President Clinton chose his friend, Maya Angelou. In his tribute, he reflects on her extraordinary life, enduring voice and the values she championed: dignity, love, kindness and our shared humanity.

Happy 80th birthday to my friend George W. Bush! Your friendship—and that of your father and your entire family—has been one of the great gifts of my life. It has always reminded me that long before we’re politicians, we’re fellow Americans and, above all, human beings. And for the next month, I’m especially grateful to finally have someone older than me! Wishing you many more years of good health, happiness, and friendship. Our country is stronger when we remember that what unites us is greater than what divides us.

One of the most meaningful traditions of the American presidency happens out of public view. When one president leaves office, they often leave a handwritten letter for the next, offering encouragement, perspective, and well wishes at the start of a new chapter. President Bill Clinton both received one of these letters and wrote one for his successor, President George W. Bush — continuing a quiet tradition that reflects the continuity of leadership and the enduring spirit of public service.

My statement on America at 250 and the state of the country:

Democracy doesn't sustain itself. Speaking at the 2025 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting, Secretary Hillary Clinton reflected on the role each of us plays in strengthening our communities, defending democratic institutions, and turning concern into action.
