After one final effort, a louder pip!, a small, wide-eyed pipper finally split the shell. Its downy feathers were still damp, its body trembling.
The mother drew near, gentle. "Pip... pip..." came the faint sound from the little one.
That is why it is called a Pipper — from that magical first sound that accompanied its arrival into the icy world.
