finished chrono trigger for the first time I'm surprisingly underwhelmed when this is a game that's been held in high esteem for decades. I respect its scope, structure, and presentation but the writing refuses to flesh itself out and the gameplay is thoroughly unremarkable

Alternatively, I would have a quick look at the older ones' gameplay and whichever drew my attention Id start there, then one from the next gen and so on!

Disagree. Start from the very beginning. You don't need every game there's no connected story. On the other hand, don't miss the experience of seeing how final fantasy has evolved through the ages.
