Today @CLUWNational recognizes the work of Charlotte Forten (born 1863), an abolitionist who wrote poetry in anti-slavery publications such as The Liberator and The National Anti-Slavery Standard. She was the first northern black educator to travel south to teach former slaves.

Today, we recognize the work of Margaret Haley. She became the first district vice president of the Chicago Teacher Federation (1898). She founded one of the largest unions for teachers that still exists today, @AFTunion, fighting for teacher education and management.

Today, we celebrate the women who formed the Lowell Female Labor Reform Association, the first union of working women in American history (1845). They went on strike for better working hours and prompted the earliest investigations into U.S. working conditions.

Today, we commemorate the work of Ming Ping Hua Lee. At age 16, she was recognized as a suffragist and led 10,000 people in the NY suffrage parade (1912). Continuing her suffragist work, Lee was granted the right to vote after the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act (1943).

As we approach the centennial anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment on August 18, 2020, many women-led organizations are creating events focusing on women leaders. At CLUW, we're planning a virtual town hall concerning the women's suffrage movement on August 6.

Black moms working full-time year-round earned just 50 cents for every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men in 2019. Black women deserve to be paid fairly for their work. We must value Black women’s work and that starts with #MomsEqualPay

The only way to beat this pandemic and reopen the economy is to invest in the services and the people who make our communities strong: people who provide clean water, safe roads, strong schools, fully staffed hospitals and much more. #FundTheFrontLines
