Masilela revealed that during his time overseas, he was earning around £20,000 per week, which was about R500,000 at the time. This meant he was making over R2 million per month. However, things changed when he decided to return home and sign for Kaizer Chiefs. The former Bafana Bafana defender said he took a massive pay cut, reducing his salary by almost 90 percent. He went from earning over R2 million per month to about R250,000 per month at Chiefs. Masilela explained that his decision was not only about money, but also about coming back home and playing for one of the biggest clubs in South Africa. His move showed his passion for the game and love for local football.
