Let’s chat about the Four Classics before I drop this AI feature film on your heads. ​Those who follow my journey know my deep, enduring love for China, its culture, and its history. Having lived on the ground, I’ve had the privilege of watching this nation evolve into the powerhouse it is today, experiencing the incredible tenacity of the Chinese spirit firsthand. The modern prosperity flowing through the country was hard-earned, and there is profound beauty in how this culture has navigated and overcome monumental struggles. ​China is a complex place, and as an outsider, I know I’m walking a fine line. As a precaution, I'm keeping this release to my own global pages (if you see it on domestic Chinese socials, it isn't me!). Touching the sacred texts of Chinese literature is a heavy proposition. But the Four Classics are simply phenomenal stories—poetic, expansive, and thrilling. They rival the works of Shakespeare and say just as much about historical Chinese society as his plays did for contemporary Britain. They are the bedrock of the culture, passing down idioms that dictate daily life in the mainland today. ​Water Margin tells the story of the 108 Stars of Destiny, vigilantes, who rebel against the corrupt local officials of the Song Dynasty to declare their freedom. It’s the undisputed foundation of wuxia literature and carries a revolutionary fire that has inspired centuries of Chinese storytellers. ​Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a sprawling historical epic that articulates the master strategic victories and heroics of China's most famous civil war. It has the massive scope, political betrayal, and action of Game of Thrones, but it predates it by centuries. ​Journey to the West is a wild, surreal discourse on how Buddhism and Taoism influence Chinese society. It stands as a comprehensive record of Chinese mysticism and remains the primary way generations have connected with the region's rich mythological roots. ​Dream of the Red Chamber, a later addition to the classics, is the Chinese Great Gatsby. It is a visceral, deeply emotional story of generational trauma, detailing the collapse of a great family’s legacy due to karmic forces and societal shifts. ​Adapting these pillars of literature to the modern day—especially through the lens of hip-hop and the slightly glitchy aesthetic of AI—is definitely unconventional. Without a doubt, some might misinterpret this project for the sake of controversy. There will be those who critique the crass language, debate the thematic interpretations, or maybe just aren't ready for the dope beats. ​But I wanted to breathe life into each of these stories in a completely unique medium. Embracing the raw nature of AI generation is an intentional style choice—something unique to this new frontier of filmmaking. Perhaps it’s because I’m just a dumb 老外 that I wanted to bridge this gap, but I truly believe there is a reason these specific stories have survived the tumults of history. Translating them for a modern Western audience is my way of pushing for global harmony and building mutual understanding across cultures. ​This project is a labor of love, built on deep respect for the source material.
