@nycbbhistory Great coverage here! I had the honor of creating and hosting his jersey # being "retired" at New Rochelle HS a few years ago. "Nut" is/was a lover of the game and all the discipline required.

KENT WASHINGTON Kent was born January 10, 1956 in New Rochelle, New York and holds the distiction of being the first American as well as the first black professional basketball player to play behind the Iron Curtain. He represented the USA and his race by leading his team to the Polish Cup Championship in 1983. Kent developed in to a quick, deceptive 5'10" point guard on the playgrounds of New Rochelle, attending New Rochelle High School, graduating in 1973 and , earning All-Conference and All-County honors! After a successful high school career he played his college basketball at Division II Southhampton College on Long Island NY. His speed, court awareness and harrassing defense, made him the motor propelled an exciting style that inspired players and spectators alike! He arrived in Poland in 1978. His popularity was so immanse in communist-era Poland during his 5 seasons there that it was called "Kentomania" by the Polish media. It was even reported that during a public gathering due to a martial law decree, several soldiers left their tanks momentarily to ask for his autograph! Such was the impact he had on the Polish sports public. He also appeared in a popular Polish film at the time called "MIs". During ‘Kentomania’, he filled arenas beyond capacity and dazzled audiences all over the country! His basketball journey across the ocean took him through 4½ seasons in Poland and 10 seasons in Sweden where he also met his future wife. In 2019, Kent was inspired to write a memoir, which became "Kentomania: A Black Basketball Virtuoso in Communist Poland". The love he received from the Polish people is what is most striking, transcending performances on the basketball court, and eventually brings us into full contact with the heart and soul of the man himself! What often happens when you are immersed in a culture with strange customs and an unfamiliar language, you learn more about yourself than you can imagine. This certainly happened to Kent and prompted him to write a book and tell his story! The remarkable journey of a remarkable man, who flew across the sea on the wings of a basketball, to make history and to discover himself in the process.
