I didn't learn the truth about discipline until after college. But what I learned transformed my relationship with discipline forever, and transformed my life. Discipline always seemed so unpleasant. The only experience I had with discipline came from teachers, coaches, and parents who made the experience unpleasant. You know the experiences I'm talking about. Then I noticed an interesting pattern in my life after college. The more disciplined I was: 1. the faster I made progress 2. the better my results were 3. the more I earned what I wanted 4. the happier I was 5. the more I felt like myself, but a better version The pattern was unmistakable: Discipline produced better results, faster and more reliably. Every time. No one had ever explained that to me. No one framed discipline as a tool to be myself and earn what I wanted. Discipline had only ever been shown to me as a tool for punishment, obedience, or compliance with what someone else wanted me to do. I was never interested in that. I'm still not. I also noticed what happened every time I drifted from discipline. When I drifted from discipline, the worse my results got. Everything took longer, got messier, and more stressful. Goals stayed incomplete. Progress slowed. I failed a lot more. Disappointment was the only reliable thing that happened when I drifted from disciplined. I didn't have more fun. I didn't have more freedom. I had less. Recognizing this pattern led me to the undeniable conclusion . . . "Discipline is the shortcut. And it's the only shortcut." The fastest and most reliable path to any result is through discipline. Every other path will take longer and is more likely to fail. That realization changed my relationship with discipline.
