In a hurricane, deadly hazards can occur well outside of the cone. Impacts can be felt far from the storm's center, even well inland and outside the forecast cone. The cone does NOT represent the size of the storm in any way. An example below is Hurricane Irma, which had a wind field that extended well beyond the cone.

How about a little May snowfall?! ☃️🌨️ No...not here in DC.😁 But much of Colorado including Denver could pick up a decent snowfall during the middle of this week! Winter storm watches are currently up for the city. Denver has not picked up a 5"+ snow event in the month of May since 1983! (7.1" on May 17th) ❄️

During the past decade there has been an increase in surf and rip current fatalities in the United States. Many of these fatalities occur when swells from distant hurricanes cause dangerous surf and rip current conditions along the U.S. coastline. NHC will provide rip current risk information that originates from local NWS Weather Forecast Offices (WFOs) in a national rip current risk map when at least one active tropical system is present.

On this day, 27 years ago, we chased what is well-known as the strongest #tornado in History. This shows the F5 tornado near peak intensity, just after devastating the community of Bridge Creek, Oklahoma. Aa freshman meteorology students at OU, we stupidly abandoned our Geo Tracker and took shelter under an overpass. Research was published that overpasses can accelerate the tornadic wind and be even more dangerous. We then saw the terrible devastation in Moore, Oklahoma with horses wandering down the highway and people emerging from their destroyed homes. Over 50 people lost their lives from the May 3, 1999 tornado outbreak. There was another massive violent tornado with a supercell to the north near Mulhall, Oklahoma that peaked after sunset. The tornado outbreak was still going when I woke up for class the next morning at 7 am. This is a day that Oklahomans will never forget. Enjoy the nice weather this May 3,

The Anniversary of the first tornado emergency in American history.
MyRadar Weather@MyRadarWX

At 6:57 p.m. on May 3, 1999, an F5 tornado was on final approach, about to raze parts of the southern Oklahoma City metro area. As it barreled up the H. E. Bailey Turnpike, forecasters at the National Weather Service in Norman, Oklahoma knew what was about to happen. Dozens would perish, and that entire neighborhoods would be obliterated. The warning meteorologist on duty knew a run-of-the-mill tornado warning wouldn't cut it. Shortly before 7 p.m., the office did something that hadn't been done before – they issued a "tornado emergency." It was the first time that phrasing had ever been used. The spur-of-the-moment decision proved fateful. We've included photos of the radar at the time, what the tornado looked like on the ground AND what was going on behind the scenes that dreaded evening at the National Weather Center – where the alert originated. Here's the text from the first-ever tornado emergency: ...TORNADO EMERGENCY IN SOUTH OKLAHOMA CITY METRO AREA... AT 657 PM CDT...A LARGE TORNADO WAS MOVING ALONG INTERSTATE 44 WEST OF NEWCASTLE. ON ITS PRESENT PATH...THIS LARGE DAMAGING TORNADO WILL ENTER SOUTHWEST SECTIONS OF THE OKLAHOMA CITY METRO AREA BETWEEN 715 PM AND 730 PM. PERSONS IN MOORE AND SOUTH OKLAHOMA CITY SHOULD TAKE IMMEDIATE TORNADO PRECAUTIONS! THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND LIFE THREATENING SITUATION. IF YOU ARE IN THE PATH OF THIS LARGE AND DESTRUCTIVE TORNADO...TAKE COVER IMMEDIATELY. Since then, there have been 314 tornado emergencies issued nationwide. The pioneered phrasing is now reserved only for the most significant events with the highest fatality potential. On May 20, 2013, another tornado emergency was issued in Moore, Oklahoma as Another EF5 tornado barreled into the beleaguered community.

Simeon Rice had the bend and burst that made him one of the best pass rushers of his era. Leslie O'Neal had over 130 sacks across long careers in San Diego and St. Louis. Who you got?
