Tina has been an incredible source of reporting on the Ford administration. If democracy dies in darkness, Tina has been a bright light. As for CityNews' decision? As said by Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman: "Big mistake. Huge."
Tina Yazdani@TinaYazdani

I am no longer employed by CityNews. I am proud of my journalism at CityNews and I stand by my reporting. I will have more to say on this later but for now please stay tuned and thank you for those who have supported me.

If you want your personal cell phone to be exempt from public disclosure… don’t conduct government business on it. The reason for these requests in the first place is the evidence that individuals in the premiers office and ministry were using personal emails and devices to discuss government business (specifically as it relates to the Greenbelt Scandal). Look, being a public figure is hard, and in many ways you lose privacy. But public service is also a privilege and comes with trade offs to privacy because transparency and accountability matter for the public. And if we accept the changes being made by the provincial government, a huge incentive to move sensitive conversations to private channels is the outcome. It just makes corruption an even easier than it has already become.
Colin D'Mello | Global News@ColinDMello

This is the admission. Premier Doug Ford - who was compelled by an Ontario court to turn over his cell phone records says "personal cellphones" should be exempt from public disclosure. globalnews.ca/news/11733205/…

@peterrevie They’re uneducated on what each level of government can and can’t do. Ex. Anger towards Trudeau, means someone won’t vote OLP. Add that to the left infighting between parties and just general voter apathy and here we are … maybe next time?

BREAKING: Ontario’s Information and Piracy Commissioner weighs in on premier Doug Ford changes to the FOI: “This amendment is about hiding government-related business to evade public accountability.” On Doug Ford’s use of a private cell phone for gov’t business: The Government of Ontario is currently seeking leave to appeal a court ruling that unanimously upheld my office's order to produce call logs from the Premier's personal cellphone that relate to government business. This is to ensure independent examination to determine whether they may be subject to access under the law. Based on evidence showing that the Premier routinely uses his personal phone to conduct government business, it is likely that they are. By changing the law retroactively, the government's message is plain: if oversight bodies get in the way, just change the rules. Full statement: #onpoli

Ford is hiding how much they paid to cancel their contract with SpaceX. Taxpayers need to know how much of their money was spent on cancelling a contract for entirely political reasons. Ford is playing with our money like it's his.
Richard Southern@RichardCityNews

#BREAKING - The Canadian Press has learned Ontario's payout to Elon Musk's SpaceX over a cancelled Starlink contract will remain a secret. Premier Ford's office tells CP the kill fee is ``Significantly less than the contract value'' which was $100-million, but that the amount could not be revealed due to the confidential settlement.

Sued to hide mandate letters. Sued to hide cell phone records. Still using personal devices and emails without keeping records. Deleted emails. Used secret codewords when discussing the Greenbelt. One of the most transparent(ly corrupt) governments in the history of Ontario.

"This government is probably been one of the most transparent governments in the history of Ontario," says Minister Stephen Crawford as he moves to waterdown a transparency tool used by the public and journalists. #onpoli

@ColinDMello Would love an example of a conversation that you would have as a government official that shouldn’t be transparent. If it’s in the best interest of the province you shouldn’t be worried about saying it out loud!

Here's the government's rationale: "Ontario is currently one of only two jurisdictions in Canada (the other being Nova Scotia) without explicit protections for records belonging to cabinet ministers or their offices." "This weakens clarity of protections for cabinet decision-making and undermines the confidentiality and candidness of discussions between ministers and their offices."

BREAKING: The Ford government is changing Ontario's Freedom Of Information act system, effectively gutting a tool journalists use to obtain documents related to government decision-making: - The Premier, Ministers and their offices will all be excluded from the FOI system. - This applies to all existing requests - Only civil servants can be FOI'd - The government is extending the response timeline from 30 calendar days to 45 business days. #onpoli

It’s called Family Day for a reason @fordnation. It’s not “let’s go shopping day”. Retail workers have family too. Instead of just doing the easy stuff all the time, why don’t you just deliver families smaller class sizes, affordable post sec education, family docs, open ERs…
