The relationship between Ryan Poles and Ian Cunningham is unique in the scouting world. A couple years ago I sat down with Cunningham to talk about how he and Poles formed their professional and personal bond that would lead them to live together for months during the 2022 offseason as they undertook a massive rebuild with the Bears. “As we were getting closer to these roles, it felt like we were living parallel lives,” Cunningham said. “As soon as he got a title, I got a title. It felt like every single year that was happening, we kind of rose up together. And I felt like once we started getting higher and higher on the quote-unquote food chain or hierarchy, I feel like that's when we started to realize, hey man, whoever gets it first, you want to ride with the other guy? And it was a no-brainer. “I remember vividly having a conversation with him. I think it may have been during COVID, and I think the first question I asked him was, once we started feeling this out and saying we would [be each other’s assistant GM], was what can I do for you? What do you need from me in that role when you're in that role? What do you want from me? And the same question he asked me.”
