If your athletes aren’t sleeping enough, they’re paying a metabolic tax. 1 week of 4–6 hrs sleep:
• Glucose tolerance ↓ 30–40%
• Insulin response ↓ ~30%
• Muscle protein synthesis ↓ ~19% Now it hits performance— Reduced brain glucose metabolism → weaker neural drive. No fast signal → no fast-twitch recruitment → ↓ RFD & explosiveness. You can still produce force… just not quickly.
And that’s what limits performance.
William A. Wallace, Ph.D.@drwilliamwallac

Controlled sleep restriction studies consistently show the same pattern: restrict healthy adults to 4-6 hours a night, and within a week, cortisol, glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, muscle protein synthesis, appetite hormones, and testosterone all move in the wrong direction. No single marker tells the story. The tax is cumulative. Hello parents and employees, This is James Evans with Rutherford County Schools. We have an important update for you about school on Friday. We had hoped to open schools for students and employees on Friday, but we are not going to be able to do so. Members of our leadership team have visited all 52 school campuses to assess the condition of parking lots and sidewalks, and we have several areas that remain ice-covered, especially around entrances that students use. We do stock snow-melt salt, but we don’t have enough to cover the amount of issues that remain. On this post, we have included photos from some of our schools to show some of the remaining issues. There are also residents who still don’t have their electricity restored and reports of multiple downed trees that are causing issues with some roads. Our central office will be open Thursday and Friday, and we will have crews working to ensure our facilities are ready to reopen for Monday. But to reiterate, all Rutherford County schools will remain closed through Friday. We truly appreciate the parents’ patience and understanding this week. We had hoped to be open at least one or two days, but we also want to ensure no one gets injured because of the remaining ice on our campuses. Also, while we have your attention, we want to remind everyone that the deadline for submitting choice school applications is Jan. 31, which is Saturday. These applications can be filed online, and anyone who wants to apply for one of the 15 choice seats at our zoned schools or one of our magnet schools should submit an application by the deadline. We have been accepting these applications since Dec. 1, and we just want to remind everyone about the approaching deadline. If you have any questions about the choice applications, please email choice@rcschools.net.

Hello RCS parents and employees,  This is James Evans with Rutherford County Schools. We have an important announcement about school because of the winter weather.  All Rutherford County schools will be closed Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 26-27, because of the snow, the expected ice, the extremely low temperatures and negative double-digit windchill that are forecast. The RCS Central Office will be closed at least on Monday. We will make a decision about the Central Office’s Tuesday schedule, on Monday. Custodians and maintenance will follow the same schedule as Central Office but should be on standby if needed, just like the other essential district workers.  To repeat, all Rutherford County schools will be closed for students and employees on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 26-27. The Central Office is closed Monday.  We hope everyone enjoys the snow but please be safe.
