Years ago, I used to cover Johnson C. Smith’s football team, and I remember how, week after week, fans would come to watch — the band. By halftime, the game would be decided and after people saw Smith’s scintillating band, the stands would empty out and the rest of the game really felt like a practice. Week after week, The Charlotte Observer would run headlines like “No Bull, Smith is 0-9” after 80-0 losses (no typo) and the team and school ran through coaches the way Usain Bolt used to run for gold medals. So watching Smith dominate two-time CIAA champ Virginia Union in the championship game Saturday feels like the biggest sports win in the school’s long and proud history. Head coach Maurice Flowers, who was on the business side of some ugly losses as a player at the school, has quickly turned Smith around, something many thought might be impossible. Can Smith keep Flowers? Can it pay him? Can Smith keep this up? Those are all questions for tomorrow. Right now, Golden Bulls’ fans should celebrate winning their first CIAA title since 1969 and their first title game appearance since 1972. It’s been a long road back for the Bulls and their fans. And right now, they should enjoy every second of it.
