A parent asked, “We feed the boys Jersey Mike’s or Chick-fil-A before games… is that OK?”
Most parents are doing this wrong and don’t even know it. It’s not about whether you ate. It’s about what you ate and when.
Heavy fat slows digestion down to a crawl. Your athlete ends up sitting in the dugout or on the bench with a burger still sitting in their stomach while they’re supposed to be explosive, focused, and locked in.
Game day rule: lean protein + carbs. Nothing else.
If you have to hit a drive-thru, here’s what to order:
Jersey Mike’s: turkey sub, light toppings, no mayo or extra cheese
Chick-fil-A: grilled chicken sandwich, fruit cup instead of fries
Panera: turkey or chicken sandwich, keep it simple
And if you’re truly in a pinch, fruit snacks + pretzels + Hydrate get the job done every time.
The athletes who dial this in early have a real edge. They show up explosive, don’t hit a wall, and recover faster.

A Carolina fan at the ACC Tournament many years ago once told me to stop complaining about the officiating, said that home cooking on Tobacco Road was mighty good.
I guess that’s what the DR feels after how that game. #WorldBaseballClassic#TeamUSA
@dotsonc Eric Davis and Dale Murphy were the 2 guys you’d go in the backyard and try to emulate during intense whiffle ball games. Eric the Red was one of my favorite non-Braves. I even bought red high top cleats because he wore them.
@grantmcauley my son just had 2 knee surgeries. He’s rehabbing his way back to be ready for baseball season. Is there any chance you’d know what kind of brace Ronald wears to protect his knee? Any help at all would be appreciated!

“It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, November 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped, and summer was gone.”
- A. Bartlett Giamatti (with a small change from October to November)
Some are interested in winning.
Others are committed to doing what winning requires.
Interest looks for a way out when it's tough.
Commitment finds a way through.
That's the difference between a good team and a great program.
