Australian palliative care nurse Bronnie Ware spent years caring for people who knew their time was short. When she asked them about their biggest regrets, one answer rose above all the others:
"I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me."
Think about that.
At the end of life, people rarely regret driving the wrong car, living in the wrong neighborhood, getting a bad haircut, or not winning one more argument on social media.
They regret the dreams they never pursued. The conversations they never had.
The risks they never took. The purpose they never embraced because they were too busy seeking approval.
Steve Jobs once said:
"Remembering that you'll die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose."
The Stoic emperor Marcus Aurelius wrote:
"You could leave life right now. Let that determine what you do and say and think."
That isn't meant to create fear. It's meant to create clarity.
When you realize your time is limited, you stop asking, "What will everyone else think?" and start asking, "Am I becoming who I was created to be?"
You can't control other people's opinions. You can't control how long you'll live.
You can't control every circumstance that comes your way.
But you can control your thoughts. You can control your actions. You can choose courage over comfort. You can choose purpose over popularity.
One day, all of us will run out of tomorrows.
So don't spend today living someone else's life.
Live with conviction. Love deeply. Take the shot. Answer the calling that's been tugging at your heart.
Because the greatest tragedy isn't dying...
It's reaching the end of your life and realizing you never truly lived.
