🏀 Coaches and Staff of all levels! ‼️ If you are returning to the same program for next season… this should be a personal priority this off-season: Step 1️⃣: Take your Job Responsibility sheet and start taking notes of what you accomplished last year, how to improve in these areas and how to be more efficient. Step 2️⃣: Brainstorm areas within the program that if given more intentional effort this area could vastly improve. This can be any facet (camps, baseline out of bounds, season ticket sales, recruiting visits, locker room upgrades, player development etc.) Step 3️⃣: Choose 1-2 of these items of importance to you. Do Research.. Start building out a pitch on how to improve that area and Create the entire new model. Complete the entire process, pick it a part, ask questions and continue to build until it’s bullet proof. Step 4️⃣: Ask your head coach to meet about upgrading that area within the program. Give your pitch with something visual to show and explain. • It’s okay if your Head Coach says “No” to the update, it’s their program… but from experience, if you identify a growth area and create a full solution to improve it without much of their time your HC will likely say “Yes”. • Just know, if you are not fulfilling your Job Responsibilities well as laid out in Step 1️⃣ then don’t expect your HC to be excited about you venturing beyond what they’ve asked of you. Built Trust is important and that initially comes from being great at what they’ve asked of you! Step 5️⃣: Go complete the plan! Once done, come back and show your HC the results. This continues to create a stronger form of Trust. This also shows you can be a self-starter and grows your knowledge of building a program.

🗣️ There are times in your career where your insecurities had caused you to invent enemies that did not exist… • Jealousy/Envy on your Coaching Staff • Chasing your own expectations and being Jealous/Envious of your Coaching peers who are advancing in ranks quicker than you. ‼️ Stop creating invisible enemies, start using your time to create opportunities! Once you start loving your own journey, the more you will appreciate those around you!

🏀 Young Assistant Coaches… 🪜 Everyone wants to climb the ladder as fast as they can… and we all probably think we are better then we are. (especially when we are young, starting up and even more so if our team sees success early) ‼️ The reality is that getting to build through a full cycle (3-5 years) at a program under the same head coach is the most ideal scenario. 🤝 3-5 years in a program also allows you to learn how to do your job, become efficient at it, then find and fill gaps within the program. 🗣️ 3-5 years in a program allows you to complete a true recruiting cycle from finding a prospect, fully recruiting them, signing them, then actually coaching them and seeing if your evaluation was good enough for them to impact winning. 📈 That time allows you to grow and track things that you touch directly. 🙏 Everyone’s story and growth journey is different, will rarely align with what was described above… The biggest element is intentional growth and reflection each year to find ways to be more efficient and organized which allows you to take on more tasks to grow the program. 🚚 Lastly, sometimes the best career move is to make no move at all and staying where you are!

🗣️ Networking thought… 📈 The more people you know in college basketball the higher your ceiling is to grow! 📝 True connections can build your knowledge base from basketball to recruiting to the business side of college sports! ‼️ You also never know who can help you with a job, help you be better at your job or help you connect with players! 🤝 Your network is essential in college basketball!

Coach K was 38-47 his first 3 years at Duke & 13-29 in the ACC Jay Wright was 52-46 his first 3 years at Villanova & 21-27 in the Big East Great things take time. You need to be process driven, not results driven A proper foundation is much more important than instant success
