Big advocate for hiring from lower levels always have been.
I'm speaking from the college admin side. A GM that operates well in the space gives you more risk tolerance on the head coach hire because it's now not all on the HC.
We're talking about handing the keys over for an 8 or 9 figure operation in some instances.
ADs can't afford to mess up which also is why they use search firms. Easier to fire a search firm and deflect blame.

What's not being mentioned with D1 programs hiring non-D1 head coaches is this has been facilitated by organizational structure change.
If you have a great GM and front office support you can go get a guy who can specialize as a coach.
This limits the school's risk of the lead decision maker making mistakes due to not understanding the level differences and allows colleges to look further afield and not just recycle same cast.
The GM position is the most interesting and dynamic change in college sports staffs in a long time. ADs now have to nail both hires and hope they work together well. Some exceptions of course.

@Coach_Drennan I was a manager at Georgia Southern. We never made NCAAs, but I never attended the Final Four l. However, our staff did an amazing job taking care of us and encouraged us to attend the Rising Coaches conference to learn and network. It was hard work, but I always felt appreciated

D1 basketball runs on the crazy and unseen work of managers and GAs. It’s sucks seeing so many left behind during the Final 4. It’s the biggest networking event in the sport. If they help build the program, we should help build their future. Get them to Indy!

At the end of the day, this is a disappointing end to a good season. Not a great season by any stretch but nothing embarrassing about an E8 exit to the top team in the country. We just never really shot the ball the way we should have this year. Congrats to Duke.

I also liken it to boxing. The bigs are constantly throwing body shots and then the hands drop and the guards catch the defense with a shot to the chin. “Head-body” as Mark Wahlburg says

This is true but I think it goes a little deeper. The elite bigs on these teams also open up it up for the guards to operate. The gravity the bigs have on the defense opens it up for open perimeter shots or hard closeouts that lead to drives/pull ups.
