1. All the kids loved it. Lots of post in front of them. 2. Nike put out a great event, and it cost $10 to go. Other local tournaments where there were no college coaches were charging $35-40 3. We grew up in an era with AND-1 and no one complained and their shirts were worse

EYBL promoting what’s wrong with today’s AAU environment with banners all throughout the gym: “I am the show” and “I’m who they came to see.” Imagine “Be the standard”; “Leaders build leaders”; “Better together”; “One Team. One Goal.”; “Dive first. Celebrate later.”

Solid thread - and along the same lines, there isn’t one path for Elem/Middle school kids either….You don’t have to travel and join super teams with kids from out of state in 4/5 grade to end up being good (fine if some people wanna do that, but it doesn’t mean it’s the end all be all)…….Follow the path that’s best for you.

The lie the grassroots world sells: there's ONE road. Be top-ranked. Get early offers. Ride it to a high-major. So if your son isn't on that road by sophomore year, you panic. That panic is based on a false premise. Here's the proof.

Player development takes TIME Team development takes TIME If your kid spent multiple years playing in a program that taught zero basketball IQ and you decided to wake up and move them to a quality team with a quality coach, AWESOME for your kid and congrats on making a good decision. Now re-read the first two lines! Patience. Value the process of learning. You cannot re-wire a bad basketball brain in a month. It likely will take multiple seasons 🤷‍♂️ and that is totally fine, especially if they are between 8-12.

The 10 Truths Parents Rarely See 1. Coaches lose sleep. 2. Decisions aren’t personal. 3. Playing time is complex. 4. Culture matters more than stats. 5. Accountability is care. 6. Coaches invest emotionally. 7. Development isn’t instant. 8. Hard feedback is intentional. 9. Wins don’t tell the whole story. 10. Coaches remember kids forever. Perspective matters.

Every week, over and over, I see the same thing in the 3-6 grade weekend event space - “Here is your jersey for the weekend. We do not run anything on offense and we play zone so you should be good!” For the life of me I do not understand it 🤷‍♂️. For the coach: It makes NO sense. No real basketball coach wants to coach pick up basketball with zero consistency. What a crappy way to spend a weekend. For the player: Being part of a team means something. Filling in every weekend with someone different is not going to help create quality bball habits or relationships. For the parent: Just go to an open gym, workout or play on the driveway. More reps and it won’t cost you 50 dollars to get into a facility to watch bad bball. Why is it so damn hard to commit to one roster and one coach and one group of teammates for a few months?

This is so important for young players to understand There is only one basketball and scoring 30 is not always going to be the ticket to get you where you want to go Basketball IQ, doing YOUR job, and winning are often the biggest keys
