For anyone that’s questioned if I truly love the game of hockey, I hope this answers some questions. You have to really love something to endure constant sexism and racism. My work is always measured by my gender and color of my skin. So no, I didn’t wake up one morning and think “I’ll cover hockey for the sake of it.” I feel in love with a game that brought me comfort through my parents divorce and the loss of my best friend. I found hockey relatable in the sense that the players have to be so agile and flexible in chasing their dreams. Moving a lot. Living with other families. Making life decisions at young ages. These are all things I experienced as a military brat and respect the mental muscle it takes to endure such unknown paths. This is why I have endless gratitude to an organization like the @TBLightning with a staff and locker room that allowed a space to learn and grow in hockey. Ask questions, fail and learn more. Yes as someone learning, I’ll make mistakes. Yes, I have a corky approach to my journalistic style. Yes, I spend extra money I don’t have to skate 1-2x a week and learn. I’m always learning and I will keep covering the sport I fell in love with whether it loves me back or not ❤️
