It runs along the coastal side of the existing rail line and is designed for walkers and bikers of all age groups and abilities. The project provides a connection to the popular Beach Street bikeway, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, and Municipal Wharf.

The City of Santa Cruz Public Works Department will host a ribbon-cutting event for the Coastal Rail Trail Segment 7 Phase II on Wednesday, May 21, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at La Barranca Park (700 Bay Street).

Why do we fight for the Rail Trail and rail transit? Because Santa Cruz deserves real options. For kids biking to school, for seniors who can’t drive, for anyone who wants to skip traffic and breathe cleaner air. #RailAndTrail

Bike + train= freedom to move 🚲🚆 Santa Cruz is already on the path. With new segments of the Rail Trail being built, we’re creating the foundation for a future where walking, biking, and public transit work together—connecting our communities and reducing our reliance on cars.

The outcome is less traffic and a better experience for everyone in the village.

That’s because 5–10 bikes can fit in the space of just one car! It may seem counterintuitive, but giving more space to people instead of cars results in more visitors who are able to spend time—and money—in busy areas.

Traffic creates a miserable experience, and most people want to avoid the hassle altogether. Unfortunately, there’s no relief in sight for Capitola Village, where many local businesses advocated against their own interests and pressured the Capitola City Council to maintain...
