116 Battalion was established in 1986 at Messina, initially with a small platoon. While the battalion became operational shortly after, the 1985 timeframe pre-dates its formal establishment and expansion, suggesting personnel serving at that time were attached to other units or were part of the initial "seed" group of 14 men (often former Rhodesian soldiers).
