Improvements underway: The Midgley Bridge parking lot (located on state Route 89A) will be inaccessible on Wednesday, Feb. 25 due to engineering survey work. Forest visitors looking to explore the Midgley Bridge Observation Site or nearby trails -- such as Wilson Canyon, Wilson Mountain or Huckaby -- will need to seek alternative parking arrangements while the survey is being conducted. Engineering surveys are conducted to collect spatial data used to design and plan safe improvements to our forest infrastructure. Survey results will be used to improve the Midgley Bridge parking lot to improve drainage and make it more accessible to low clearance vehicles.

We're taking advantage of the current winter weather conditions to conduct pile burns our Flagstaff and Mogollon Rim ranger districts throughout the week. Pile burns help reduce overgrown vegetation to help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires. Visit our website for more information: fs.usda.gov/r03/coconino/n…

Annual seasonal road restrictions implemented across Coconino National Forest FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., Jan. 8, 2026—The Coconino National Forest is beginning to restrict vehicle access to many forest roads in order to protect them as inclement winter weather arrives. While roads remain open to use by all non-motorized traffic, forest personnel will barricade roadways using gates to restrict motor vehicle access during the season’s wet and snowy months. Each winter, the Coconino National Forest prohibits the use of motorized vehicles on many forest roads to protect the roads from damage, and to reduce the risk of stranded forest visitors. Forest Service personnel will be patrolling forest roads within the coming days to swing gates and inform forest visitors of road access changes. Drivers are asked to abide by all posted signage and locked gates and are reminded to avoid driving on open roads that appear to be saturated to prevent road damage and soil erosion, and to avoid the possibility of getting stuck. Motorists are also asked to remain aware of road beginning and end points. Due to changes in elevation across the forest, many roads may begin in desert conditions and end in deep snow, such as Schnebly Hill Road. The Coconino National Forest’s website is frequently updated with changes to motorized road access via the Forest Roads Status web page. (fs.usda.gov/.../conditions…)

Coconino National Forest fire managers will continue hazardous fuels reduction work throughout the winter as weather conditions allow, pending all required approvals. Pile burning is meant to treat slash, like branches, piled by thinning crews with the aim of reducing flammable fuels. The decision to proceed with each pile burn will depend on multiple factors, including snowpack, air quality, ventilation, forecast weather and wind, and resource availability. We use prescribed fire to help reduce overgrown vegetation and protect local communities, infrastructure, and natural resources from wildfires. Incoming precipitation means our window for implementing prescribed fire is closing. Today is our last planned day of prescribed fire for the foreseeable future and smoke impact in the Flagstaff and Verde Valley areas is expected to significantly decrease. Information about prescribed fire projects can always be found on our InciWeb page at inciweb.wildfire.gov/incident-infor…

Coconino NF to lift fire restrictions Thursday FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., Sept. 3, 2025—The Coconino National Forest will lift fire restrictions at 8 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 4, due to recent widespread precipitation across the forest. While forest-wide restrictions will be lifted, several areas of the Coconino National Forest are subject to permanent year-round fire restrictions, which will continue to remain in effect. Forest visitors are asked to adhere to best practices when building a campfire. Where fires are permitted, use established fire rings, fire pans or mound fires, and keep fires small. It is always illegal to leave a campfire unattended. Use at least six gallons of water and a shovel to completely extinguish a campfire, making sure it is dead out, wet and cold to the touch. Down and dead wood may be gathered around a camping area for use at a campsite, but it is illegal to load wood in a vehicle to remove from the forest without a permit. Do not cut standing trees or remove limbs from standing trees. The Coconino National Forest may re-enter fire restrictions at any time should conditions to do so be met. Coconino National Forest visitors are reminded to report all abandoned campfires to the forest’s dispatch center at 928-527-3552.
