The Palestinian people have every right to their own state. Everyone should recognise that. Regardless of what the current leadership in both Gaza and Israel says, a two-state solution is the *only* long-term solution. That said, randomly “recognising” a state that doesn’t actually exist won’t help make it a reality. A state without borders, unified governance or any sort of shared political infrastructure isn’t a state at all. Keir Starmer said he would hold off on recognising a Palestinian state until “the moment of maximum impact”. Nobody in government seems able to explain how doing so now will have *any* significant impact at all, on anything. The prospect of UK recognition of a Palestinian state was an opportunity to pressure both sides into taking steps towards peace. That opportunity has now been completely squandered - for what?
