It switched its entire consensus mechanism, from Proof of Work to Proof of Stake, while running live!
This was the software equivalent of rebuilding an airplane engine mid-flight.

The result?
A 99.95% reduction in energy consumption.
Ethereum went from consuming as much electricity as a mid-sized country to roughly the energy of a hundred US homes.
And it worked.
It was called "The Merge."
