Six months ago, I faced a five person panel interview. After multiple rounds of phone screenings and exams that lasted for six weeks, this was the final in person stage. This wasn’t just any job. So I went all out in my preparation, and it showed. About minutes into the interview, I had the entire panel engaged, everyone except one person. She was a woman about my age with a completely flat affect. Her expression was impossible to read. she had a perfect poker face. Then she finally spoke. Her question was a tough one, but fortunately, I was ready for it. In fact, it was almost magical, she asked it word for word exactly as I had written it in my notepad. She said, “I see from your resume that you’re military trained with active experience in ICU, ER, Psyc and MedSurg. You have everything… except the experience needed for this job.” I didn’t rush. I took a deep breath, and a slight, sheepish smile formed at the corner of my mouth. In my head, I thought, Welcome to the party. Out loud, I replied calmly, "Thank you for that question, Mrs. [Her Name].” The moment I said her name, I saw her relax for the first time. “Yes, you’re right, I don’t have direct experience in this specific position. But the last five years have built me precisely for this question and this role.” I wrapped it up by saying, “I want to be the best registered nurse I can possibly be. To achieve that, I believe I need this experience. This is the final piece of the puzzle, and I’m convinced I’m in the right place, with the right people, to make it happen.” She listened to everything, paused for a moment, and simply said, “Oh… thank you.” That was it.
