Heroic World Tier in Val & Naigtal feels like it’s missing a real reason to exist right now. For anyone who hasn’t been on PTR yet, the 2 new mini zones in Patch 12.0.7, Val and Naigtal, feature a pretty standard outdoor endgame structure. There are world quests, rares, treasures and a world boss in each zone and as of right now on PTR they rotate weekly. The rewards from these activities include Field Accolades, Voidlight Marl, crests and gear. The interesting part is that these zones also have 2 different world tier difficulties: Normal and Heroic. Heroic increases both the difficulty and the rewards, but after spending quite a bit of time testing it on PTR I genuinely don’t really understand the purpose of Heroic World Tier in its current state. Heroic is hard. Very hard. I’m certainly not a top 0.1% player, far from it, but my PTR character is in fully upgraded Myth gear with some of the best trinkets available and I was still dying a lot in Heroic World Tier. Certain rares hit extremely hard, some world quests become pretty brutal solo and if you accidentally overpull normal enemies it can get rough very quickly. There’s also a random NPC mechanic similar to Prey systems where an NPC can suddenly appear and start attacking you. The problem is this mob absolutely slaps. Some of its attacks were hitting me for around 25% of my health per hit and from what I could tell there wasn’t actually any reward attached to killing it. It just feels like another layer of frustration added on top of already difficult content without any payoff. I actually don’t mind outdoor content being difficult. I think there’s room in WoW for genuinely dangerous open world content and I think the idea itself is pretty cool and it worked in Legion Remix. The issue is that the rewards currently do not remotely justify the difficulty. As of the current PTR build, Heroic world quests and rares give: • Increased Field Accolades • Champion crests • A chance at Warbound Veteran gear • No meaningful increase in Voidlight Marl (they literally give 30) The world boss does drop Hero track loot in Heroic World Tier which is nice, but that’s only once per week. So after that initial world boss kill and maybe getting some of the achievements, what is the actual reason to continue playing in Heroic World Tier over Normal? Right now it feels like significantly more effort, more deaths and more time for rewards that are either already outdated for geared players or not valuable enough to justify the jump in difficulty. Field Accolades especially feel strange here. You get more of them from Heroic, but at the moment there isn’t really enough attached to the currency to make me care about farming harder content for them. If Heroic is meant to be this dangerous endgame outdoor mode then the rewards need to match that philosophy. Personally I think Heroic World Tier needs a much stronger incentive structure. A few ideas: • Massive increase to Voidlight Marl gains from Heroic activities • Larger increase to Field Accolades rewards • Make Field Accolades Warbound so mains can funnel progression towards alts • Add deterministic rewards instead of pure RNG caches, which could be as simple as adding a vendor with specific Hero track items purchasable with Accolades That last point is probably the biggest one for me. Back in 12.0.5 the Hero track cache already felt a little too RNG heavy and Heroic World Tier feels like the perfect place to instead introduce targeted outdoor progression. If players are going to throw themselves at genuinely difficult open world content then having a long-term deterministic reward path would make the system feel substantially more worthwhile. Because right now I keep coming back to the same question: Why would I stay in Heroic World Tier after the first week? I really do think the foundation here is solid. The zones themselves are cool, the idea of harder outdoor content is genuinely refreshing and I actually enjoy the danger aspect of it. It just feels like the rewards currently belong to a much easier version of the content. At the moment Heroic World Tier feels more like a novelty mode than an actual progression path and I think with a few reward changes it could become one of the more interesting outdoor systems WoW has had in a while and something that could evolve into more zones in the future.
