The death of Eugene Mutuku, a 19-year-old final-year KMTC (Kenya Medical Training College) Yatta/Matuu Campus student.
What HappenedOn the morning of Friday, June 6, 2026 ( Mutuku was traveling on a Nicco Sacco (Nicco Movers) matatu (registration KDV 713J) along Thika Road toward Kasarani for his clinical attachment at a hospital.
He allegedly got into a dispute with the crew ( conductor) over a small fare balance (reports mention around Sh20–50). Witnesses and video evidence suggest the conductor pushed/threw him out of the moving vehicle.
He fell onto the road, was run over by the same matatu (which did not stop), and sustained severe head and body injuries.
A good Samaritan (a motorist behind) stopped, helped rush him to hospital — first to a facility then Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) — but he succumbed to his injuries.
The matatu was later abandoned in the Kariokor area of Nairobi and impounded by police. The driver and conductor fled and remain at large; police are hunting for them.
Public and Official ReactionWidespread outrage on social media and from leaders (e.g., calls to ground/suspend the entire Nicco Sacco until the crew is arrested).
It has renewed debates about reckless matatu culture, passenger safety, and fare disputes turning deadly.
This echoes past similar incidents, including the 2018 case of student Doreen Kinya (whose crew was recently sentenced to 10 years).
Videos of the incident (dashcam footage showing him falling and being run over) have circulated widely, intensifying calls for justice. Family members have spoken out demanding accountability, dismissing some online claims and emphasizing his bright future as a soon-to-be graduate.
