#AgPhDRadioUpdate | Prepare Alfalfa For Winter Is your alfalfa ready for winter?  There are several big factors when it comes to winter survivability with alfalfa that are within your control.  First, make sure your soil pH is at or very close to 7.  If it’s down to 6.5 pH or less, add lime.  Second, make sure your P & K levels are very high.  Alfalfa needs lots of fertility.  Third, keep the stress down in your alfalfa by killing any weeds and insects between every single cutting.  The amount of years your alfalfa is super productive is often determined on day one when you seed, because if everything I just listed is in great shape, including soil pH, fertility, weeds, and insects, you will have set your crop up well.  One last note.  If you’ve never tried fungicide late in the season, do it.  A week or two after your last cutting of the season we recommend at least a half rate of a strobilurin fungicide like Headline or Quadris for about 3 bucks to improve plant health and winter survival.
