So what does this mean? Look for strategies that don’t look pretty. Their monthly results sometimes suck. Maybe they have drawdowns that stretch for months. In other words: strategies where whatever can go wrong… already has. No Black Swan surprises. What do you think? Am I making excuses for sucky strategies—or am I on to something?

My instinct is: there’s no free lunch. If you insist on consistency for 36 months, then month 37 is going to rock your world. Like fault lines below the ocean… if there’s no motion, no small earthquakes to release the tension, pressure just builds and builds… …and when the plates finally slip… well, you better be standing in the doorframe.

You know the expression: “consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds?” I’m starting to think that applies to trading strategies too. A lot of traders - even very experienced traders - LOVE consistency. They want smooth equity curves… low drawdowns… gentle results.

In contrast, with something like Collective2… you still have responsibility. You always have the ability to decide what to do. And maybe responsibility is something people want to avoid? Your thoughts?

Is it possible that we’ve gotten it wrong? That maybe people like the idea of handing over their money, and their control, for 3 months, 6 months, 12 months at a time. At least that way, you can relax. Go out to dinner. It’s out of your hands. You’re Odysseus, tied to the mast.
