The Collen Mashawana Foundation visited a 62-year-old partially blind woman, Hazel Naicker, at her home in Bramfisher Extension 4, where she lives with her son (28), grandson (17) and granddaughter (15), all of whom are unemployed. The family is living in a dilapidated and unsafe structure with exposed electrical wiring that has previously caused electric shocks, as well as overcrowded conditions. Allegations of abuse, reported by community members, are also being addressed. The foundation has committed to working with relevant stakeholders and will build the family a new home. #CMF #Onebrickatatime

Today, 16 March 2026, the team from the Collen Mashawana Foundation visited 74-year-old Ugogo Joyce Mjaji at her home in Duduza, where she lives with her family of ten, including her five unemployed children and five grandchildren. The family’s home was severely damaged in a fire on the evening of 14 December 2025. Ugogo Joyce had been alone at the time and was lighting a candle for light when the fire started and spread throughout the house. The blaze destroyed many of the family’s belongings and caused extensive damage to the RDP house, affecting two bedrooms as well as the kitchen and toilet. Since the incident, the family has been living in difficult conditions and has been forced to sleep on the floor. Despite the hardship, members of the community showed compassion by donating some essential items and assisting with replacing a few windows to help the family cope. Following today’s visit, CMF has committed to assisting the family by rebuilding their home and restoring dignified living conditions for Ugogo Joyce and her family. #onebrickatatime

Today, I had a very valuable session with Kgosi Thabo Seatlholo, Chairperson of the National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders, alongside Her Majesty Kgosi Gaboilelwe Moroka, the ruler of the Barolong Boo Seleka from Thaba ’Nchu. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue our dialogue on collaboration with traditional leaders across the country and how NGOs and the private sector can support royal councils. We strongly believe that aligning traditional leadership with the business community can help address the socio-economic challenges faced by many South Africans. Our discussions focused on proactively tackling issues related to climate change, disaster preparedness, and community education, ensuring that we save lives and strengthen resilience in vulnerable communities. Additionally, this partnership will support government and other stakeholders in improving the delivery of essential services, including water security, which remains a critical challenge in many parts of the country. Thank you once again for a meaningful and constructive engagement.

My heart goes out to the people of Limpopo as ongoing rains continue to cause flooding, destroying homes, businesses, and infrastructure. Please stay safe during this difficult time.

After learning about the widely reported inhumane living conditions in Phugwani Village in Malamulele, where residents have lived for decades without access to clean drinking water and rely on a well shared with animals, I led a delegation from the Collen Mashawana Foundation to witness the situation firsthand. We have committed to drilling a borehole and making a donation to support the community. The visit also forms part of our nationwide consultative process with traditional leaders to explore partnership models that will help strengthen their capacity to respond to climate-related disasters and improve access to housing, water, food, education and job opportunities. We are grateful to the Phugwani Royal Council under the leadership of Chief Wisani Hlungwani Madonsi and the community leaders who joined @CollenMashFound
