It’s true that one can make a very strong case that the govt is out of touch with most of the country.
However, you could easily make the case that they are very much aware of the cost of livings pressures but as there’s no imminent national election they feel under little pressure to do anything about it.
Why else would the govt parties both include substantial tax cut measures in their manifestos? They know people are feeling the squeeze. The problem lies with the fact that as soon as they got into power again, they demonstrated that they didn’t mean a word of it.
They once again chose to keep personal taxation high, citing the lack of scope to delver meaningful cuts. Hospitality sector was the only beneficiary of positive tax changes. It was a falsehood to say they had no scope, we had €8.1bn in new spending in last year’s budget. Govt expenditure has doubled in the last 10 years. We have had years of record corporate tax receipts.
There has been plenty of available opportunities to reward those who work hard and feel little reward with the punitive levels of taxation on personal income. Simply put - they don’t want to reduce taxes. It’s why last month when announcing the temporary excise cuts, they committed to increasing carbon tax on non-auto fuel next month.
The fuel protests are a strong indicator that people are losing patience with a government that claims to understand the pressure people are under, yet is hesitant to make any meaningful changes to their own addiction to spending taxpayers money.
All indications are they’ll announce further cuts today, which to save face they’ll claim was down to negotiations with organised representative bodies, when everyone knows it’s in response to the nationwide protests.
Will this finally be the wake up call that people just can’t suck it up anymore or will it be back to business as usual come October? Only time will tell.
