#TANZANIA: PRESIDENT SAMIA DEFENDS USE OF FORCE IN OCTOBER UNREST President Samia Suluhu Hassan has defended the government’s response to the October 29–30 protests, rejecting criticism that excessive force was used. Speaking in Dar es Salaam during a meeting with elders, she argued that authorities acted to protect national security and citizens’ safety. Samia questioned those who accuse the government of heavy-handedness, asking what alternative they expected when demonstrations threatened to spiral out of control. “We have seen in other countries when protests get out of hand, governments apply strong force. Now when they return to blame us for using force, what did they want? Were they the sponsors of what happened? Did they want us to simply watch until their mission succeeded? No. We swore to protect this country, its borders, the safety of citizens and their property, and we will continue to do so,” she said.
