Even if you don't know The Yogscast, consider donating to this year's Jingle Jam. £35 gets you over £1,000 worth of games and supports some amazing charities in the process!

Every year we’re stunned by your generosity, and this year's no different. £2 million raised for our 12 charity partners—and it’s all thanks to you! We're not done yet, though: if you've yet to donate, please consider supporting #JingleJam2023! jinglejam.tiltify.com

#TheGameAwards are kind of pointless now. It's supposed to be about acknowledging the hard-working developers behind the year's best games, but all people care about is seeing hype trailers from a few big-name studios. It feels like the organizers would rather do away with speeches altogether, reel off the winners, and then just have 3 hours of adverts. Literally... what is the point.
Also the Larian devs were supposed to announce BG3 for Xbox in their speech, but they got told to 'wrap it up' so they forgot to mention it 😂🫠

Ok, so... I'm planning to run a short playtest for my new game Tiny Dungeons in the run-up to Steam Next Fest. Anyone interested in taking part? 👀
In need of honest feedback on the look and feel, including combat, mechanics, and the 'flow' of levels. Also need to know if the controls feel right to other people!!
Not everything will be included, probably only 4 / 5 levels. But.. What is there will be polished and fully implemented.
If you're interested, let me know by leaving a comment!

The home building is *so close* to being finished! Just added a furniture collection screen and object placing mode.
Just needs a bit more polish...

Yes, yes I should be working on a Steam demo for Next Fest, but what if... I made a Game Boy game and put it onto a cartridge! 🤩

This video makes me question whether working at a large game dev studio is really where I want to be going.
(For context, this is Timothy Cain - Producer and lead programmer on Fallout talking about the industry)

As a gamer, I can clearly see some of what's described here, and it's happening more frequently with each new big release.
As an indie developer, the idea of having the enjoyment, creativity, and soul ripped out of my work terrifies me.
I'm not saying that this is a pervasive, industry wide issue... there are definitely great studios out there that breed a culture of creativity and a degree of risk taking. I'm also not saying that the problems with AAA games stem from lazy or unenthusiastic developers.
The problem essentially boils down to just how much games cost now, and the hesitation to push the envelope out of a fear of financial loss. Game development (at least for AAA) seems to have become an act of keeping the accountants, senior leadership, and shareholders happy. Making good games that innovate and push the envelope is secondary, at least to the people actually making the decisions.
Obsidian is a fantastic example of how a studio should be run. Even before they were acquired by Microsoft, they were a fairly big (but independent) developer. When they couldn't find a publisher willing to take the financial risk on Pillars of Eternity, what did they do? Did they cut features? No. Did they add gimmicks to appeal to a wider audience? No. Did they do anything which would dramatically alter their creative vision for their game, in order to get it published? No.
What did they do then? They resorted to crowdfunding and ended up making the game that they and the FANS wanted.
As an indie developer, I feel excited every time I open my game to work on it. That excitement has never really gone away and I hope it never does. The idea of having the creative process dictated to me rather than it being a natural process is actually kind of perverse.
No wonder games feel stale to gamers, it's not because developers don't have new ideas, it's because the publishers won't allow those new ideas to be implemented in order to play it safe...

@PixelArtJourney Platters of tiny cubed shaped cakes, maybe a retro gaming corner for the kids? Not a single ‘mine’ or ‘craft’ in sight 😂 Just quality pixel art, good food and the old classics on a couple of vintage arcade machines

@franuka_art This just gave me an idea… A cosy pixel art version of Cities Skylines 😍
That’s the next project sorted! Haha

Making a (psychological?) horror game from scratch in @GameMakerEngine in just 2 days. Should be interesting as I have absolutely no ideas or artwork lined up for this 😂
