गणतन्त्रको राष्ट्रिय गानको संगित भरेका दार्जीलिङ जन्मका अम्बर गुरुङले वि.सं. २०१७ (सन् १९६०) मा दार्जीलिङमा रहँदा "नौ लाख तारा उदाए" बोलको गीतले प्रवासी नेपालीको पीडा र अस्मितालाई मुखरित गरेको थियो। तत्कालीन भारतीय संस्थापन पक्षले यस गीतलाई 'विद्रोही' ठहर गर्दै अल इन्डिया रेडियोमा प्रतिबन्ध लगायो। यता नेपालमा भने राष्ट्रियता र सांस्कृतिक पुनर्जागरणको अभियान हुंदा राजा महेन्द्रको कानमा यो गीत पुगिसकेको थियो। भारतमा गुरुङमाथि लागेको प्रतिबन्ध नै उनलाई नेपाल भित्र्याउने मुख्य अवसर बन्यो। राजा महेन्द्रले अम्बर गुरुङको राष्ट्रभक्ति र अनुपम सङ्गीतकारिताको मर्म बुझेर उहाँलाई कुनै साधारण आप्रवासीका रूपमा होइन, बल्कि राजकीय निमन्त्रणा (शाही निमन्त्रणा) पठाएर वि.सं. २०२५ (सन् १९६८) मा आदरपूर्वक नेपाल आमन्त्रण गरियो। नागरिकता र बसोबासका सम्पूर्ण कानुनी प्रक्रियाहरूलाई राजकीय हुकुम प्रमाङ्गीद्वारा तत्कालै सहज बनाइयो। नेपाल भित्रिएकै वर्ष राजा महेन्द्रले उनलाई तत्कालीन नेपाल राजकीय प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठानको सङ्गीत निर्देशक एवं सङ्गीत विभाग प्रमुखको प्रतिष्ठित पदमा नियुक्त हुकुम भयो। राज्यका तर्फबाट उचित आवास र मासिक वृत्तिको व्यवस्था गरी उनलाई नेपाली सङ्गीतको नयाँ जग बसाल्ने पूर्ण स्वतन्त्रता र जिम्मेवारी सुम्पिइयो। वि.सं. २०२८ मा राजा वीरेन्द्रको गद्दीआरोहण भएपछि पनि अम्बर गुरुङप्रतिको राजकीय आदर र संरक्षणमा कुनै कमी आएन। कला र शिक्षाको संस्थागत विकासमा रुचि राख्ने राजा वीरेन्द्रले गुरुङलाई राज्यको अमूल्य निधिको रूपमा सम्मान दिइबक्स्यो। अम्बर गुरुङलाई देशका दूरदराजमा पुगेर मौलिक नेपाली लोक धून र रैथाने बाजागाजाहरूको अनुसन्धान एवं संरक्षण गर्ने विशेष बजेट र राजकीय सहयोग प्राप्त भयो। गणतन्त्र स्थापनापछि, नेपाल राजकीय प्रज्ञा–प्रतिष्ठानलाई भाषा–साहित्य, ललितकला तथा सङ्गीत–नाट्यका छुट्टाछुट्टै प्रज्ञा–प्रतिष्ठानमा विभाजन गरिएपछि नेपाल सङ्गीत तथा नाट्य प्रज्ञा–प्रतिष्ठान स्थापना भएको हो। सो काम माओवादीका गुरिल्लाहरुले प्रज्ञा–प्रतिष्ठानलाई कमजोर पार्न गरिएको थियो भन्दा दुईमत नपर्ला! अहिले नेपाल संगीत तथा नाट्य प्रज्ञा प्रतिष्ठानको उपकुलपतिमा झुमा लिम्बू सिफारिस भएकी छिन्। पूर्वी नेपालको ताप्लेजुङबाट काठमाडौँ छिरेपछि ललितकला क्याम्पसमा अध्ययनरत रहँदा झुमा लिम्बूले सङ्गीत महर्षि अम्बर गुरुङको सामीप्य पाउने अवसर पाइन्। अम्बर गुरुङले नै झुमाको स्वरका मसिना कमिकमजोरीहरूलाई औंल्याउँदै उनलाई साङ्गीतिक गाम्भीर्य, गायकीको गहिराइ र कलाप्रतिको साँचो समर्पण सिकाए। झुमा लिम्बूले आफ्नो अन्तरवार्ताहरूमा अम्बर गुरुङलाई आफ्नो गायन यात्राको मुख्य दिशा निर्देश गर्ने 'सच्चा गुरु' का रूपमा सदैव उच्च सम्मान दिने गर्छिन्। तर राजा, बाहुन र क्षेत्री र हजारौं वर्ष पुरानो खस सभ्यताप्रति यति धेरै नश्लिय विषवमन किन गरेको हो?
