Here's an odd one I just heard. Ashkenazi Jews are descendants of Ashkenaz, the grandson of Japheth, Noah's son. This means that they did not descend from Shem, and therefore are not Semites. Sigh... Here's where the Ashkenazi term comes from: According to Talmudic tradition, the 70 grandsons of Noah populated the world and each went to a different geography. The Talmud says that the descendants of Ashkenaz went to the Germanic region. This is why ancient Judaism referred to that area as the land of Ashkenaz. So when the Jews migrated from Israel to Eastern Europe, they settled in what they traditionally viewed as the territory of the descendants of Ashkenaz. This is why we adopted the name Ashkenazi. It's about where we settled, not about our own ancestry.
