For some reason, my portfolio tweet has a playback error, so I went ahead and reuploaded it to fix that. I'll have my new portfolio ready at some point, as the music made in this portfolio was made quite a while ago.

This is my latest track on Bandcamp. The theme I went with for this track is ambiguous, with a bit of tension. I primarily used augmented chords and sound design elements, along with a few orchestral instruments, to create a rich, wide sound. blakeburnett.bandcamp.com/track/a-unknow…

It's been quite some time since I last posted here. I've been working on several things in the background, but I'll post here occasionally for now. As of now, I'll be more active on Bandcamp, and possibly down the road, I'll do more with X. blakeburnett.bandcamp.com/track/a-cluste…

One tip I have for improving your music is to transcribe or listen to music and be a bit analytical about it. The best way to start off is with something simple and figure out what the melody, bass, and accompaniment are doing. This can be as simple as pulling up a piano sample and then trying to play along to a YouTube video. Over time, you'll get better and be able to understand what's going on in a piece of music, which can help your compositions in general.

I revisited one of my old themes from 2023. The first part is an intro sequence which features a more drawn out version of the melody, while Section A presents the melody in its full form. I also haven't balanced that much, so things sound a bit out of balanced and lack clarity.

If you have severe dry skin in the colder months, I recommend O'keeffe's. I personally find that it works better than most lotions. What are some other items that work well for dry skin?

I experimented with a bit of minor and major tonality. I may expand on this, but for now I'm just testing out different things.

From time to time, there have been many compositions I have that aren't the best, in my opinion, so they stay on my hardrive. It's all part of the learning process.

@joshsilentmode For the most part, I do 2 chances. In rare situations, I do 3, but generally, 2 is good in my opinion.

To celebrate The 2025 New Year, I made a short fanfare for the celebration and to use as measure of my progress when 2026 comes around.

Reverb is a handy tool that can be used to put instruments in the background or foreground. I'm still learning about it, but I just recently started to put it in my mixes, so there's a learning curve.

For my next project, I'll be experimenting with mixing quite a bit. There's a way to automate just about anything, so I'll be automating the frequency bands to see if anything interesting happens.

For some reason the music didn't get attached to the tweet I sent out a few days ago so here it is. The way I got a full sound is by filling out the whole frequency spectrum. The bass in this case is a variety of instruments, but primarily synths. The middle section consists of the organ and other various instruments, while the highs are the melodic instruments.

I ended this piece on Section B as this theme is all about the hero prevailing. If this was a battle theme, I would probably have it loop, but it all comes down to the context and what your goal for the piece is. The overall feeling I went for was a cinematic and powerful vibe for Section B. This is also the first time I attempted a large cinematic section. I'd say it turned out good, but there are some things I can do better the next time I compose something similar to this. The instruments I used were brass and percussion for power, the organ for a bit of depth, strings and choir for a nice bed of sound and the woodwinds as a extra layer. I also added in some counter melodies, so as the melody rested or held on a note for a while, I used some countermelodies to fill in the gap. The way I mixed this was by mixing a group and then going to an individual track. I would mix the strings as a whole and then address any other parts of the strings and do the same for all the other sections.

I had some issues getting the sound to not pop in and out. I'll probably have to update Cubase at some point as I'm currently 2 versions behind, which has caused some issues with certain plugins. I have this interlude here as a sort of break from the dark mood and a change of texture which will be setting up for Section B. I kept the interlude's harmony a bit more hopeful and positive.
