Sri Lanka has always been very volatile when it comes to food security. Despite our soil being rich and we having the capability of strengthening our agriculture sector, farmers have long been neglected. Now with the Middle tensions, the government is yet to announce a clear plan to bring down the rising food costs but instead is sadly shifting its focus on political antics.
While the fuel subsidies have helped to some extent and the fertilizer subsidies increased for farmers, which is encouraging, much more needs to be done to ensure Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector emerges in order to ensure food security at a time when any calamity is unpredictable.
The government must realize that our agriculture sector has a lot of potential if farmers are encouraged & well looked after & steps must eventually be taken to minimize Sri Lanka’s dependency on food imports.
As the world moves on volatile grounds, all efforts must be taken to make Sri Lanka self sufficient in food that can be produced locally while farmers must be encouraged to lead the sector. This will also be a gateway to Sri Lankan products being sought after in the world market.
The government must make all efforts to concentrate on strengthening local sectors and easing the struggles of the people but it is instead focused on political revenge and drama against the opposition.
